Why Do I Have a Blog?

I've had some emails lately asking why I bother having a beauty blog when I don't seem to purchase all that much makeup, at least by their standards, and I wanted to take a second and address this.

I have a beauty blog for me, simply because I love to buy and play with and write about makeup. I'm not doing this for anyone else or with any financial incentives, and anyone who doesn't like me blog is free to stop reading. I think it's fun to be able to show off what I've bought, express my views and share ideas and a beauty blog gives me the perfect outlet, especially since none of my "in real life" friends share this interest.

I'm also a single girl living in one of the most expensive cities in the world, which means that I have neither the cash nor the storage to buy every new Chanel eye shadow released. Don't get me wrong, I absolutely admire those who can and am most appreciative (and slightly jealous!) when they share and post pictures of them, but even I could afford every lip gloss Bobbi Brown makes, I'd have no place to put them! I live within both my means and my space, and I there are other things I like to buy as well (I like to think I had a hand in J.Crew's profits being up this year).

Also, I actually like having a collection tailored enough that I actually get to use most of what I own. By non-makeup-aficionado status it's massive, never fails to elicit comments from people who come to visit, and certainly gives me options in the morning, but it's not so overwhelmingly large that I'm apt to forget I own something and accidentally purchase a duplicate. Every now and then I have the satisfying feeling of having used something up (rare though it may be), and can handily keep track of everything.

Finally, it sounds cheesy, but I'm actually really proud of this blog and the feeling I have writing it. For those who believe that I don't update it often enough or buy enough new things to captivate you, there are plenty of other wonderful sites to read, and I don't plan to stop writing any time soon.

  1. Good for you, SB, keep blogging! People seem to think that once they become regular readers of a blog they have some right to tell you how to run it. Not so! As you point out, there are many other blogs to read if they don't like it. I, for one, will keep checking in!

  2. Seriously? Someone took the time to email you and say this? Oy. Too much time on their hands ;) I love your blog, and really enjoy your pictures and opinions on the things you choose to purchase.

  3. Ugh, people can be so stupid. If you enjoy blogging, then you should blog. And if we enjoy reading it, we will! I love your blog, because I don't go buy everything that comes out, and I like that you are very careful with your purchases. I feel like I can really trust your opinion.

  5. Not only do I really enjoy reading your blog, but I also think that it is incredibly rude for anyone to presume to tell how to run it...keep it up and keep them coming!

  6. I don't get why someone would think they have the right to try, oh so foolishly try, to bully you into doing something that is totally unnecessary. Girl, it's a blog, you are free to do as you please and you owe no one any explanation. However, I will say I enjoyed reading it.

  7. Thanks everyone for showing support! It's amazing that some people have enough time on their hands to read something just to criticize it!

  8. How so very rude? I always wonder if it's the fact they can't say it to you in person that makes people say the rudest things in emails or in comments. I love your blog- it's so hip and cool, and it's from New York! Can it get any more exciting? lol. Anyway, keep doing what you do, it's fabulous!

  9. Dear NYCityPretty - I love your blog and your picks. It means a lot to see the items that have special meaning to YOU!

I get stupid emails all the time. I usually try to ignore them, but they still get to me.

It happens to all of us. I'm not saying that it's ok.

Next time they send you something like that, tell them to s-u-k it. They have nothing better to do with their time.

  10. Lately several other bloggers have also been assailed by "haters". Just remember that they criticize you to compensate for their own feelings of inferiority. Keep doing what you're doing. If you please yourself first, it will shine through in your posts. You can't help but wonder why these critics don't just read another blog; one more to their taste.

  11. People can be weird! I love your blog, keep it up and don't let those haters get you down. Also, since when did blogging come to be about purchasing items. I just think some people don't understand what blogging is about.

  12. Hear hear! Well done you - stick to your guns, do what you love and you should NEVER be put under pressure to buy unnecessary things just to keep up with others. I think it's fab that you keep your collection suited to your needs rather than going over board. I wish i had the same control.

  13. Oh whatever... I love your blog and enjoy reading your posts! Seriously there's no way that these haters can be appeased--- in their opinion if you buy a lot-- they have a problem, you buy too little-- they have a problem!!! Clearly it's none of their business in both cases, but it still doesn't stop them =/ so don't even bother. I look forward to many more wonderful posts from you! :)

  14. I recently found your blog, and I love it. I'm glad that you will keep doing what you enjoy, and I will continue to enjoy your posts. My new Origins Caramel Candy gloss was acquired thanks to one of your look of the day posts, and I couldn't be happier with it. It's unfortunate that people take the time and effort to try to bring someone down.

  15. Please keep on writing your blog! First and foremost, it is your toy to play with however you see fit. I am dismayed by the negative comments. Would those folks truly take the time to send a letter to a book author saying they didn't like the last couple chapters, so please rewrite them. I don't think so! Just find a different blog to read if this one doesn't suit you.

  16. Doing it for yourself is the best thing. I am doing that at the moment too. Stay strong!

  17. I love your blog!!! Too bad for the haters--I'm glad your ignoring them. There's something so nice about coming here-I really do enjoy your posts. It's completely whatever makes you happy--that's why it's YOUR blog (and not theirs!)

  18. Wow! Thanks to you all SO MUCH for the support! It means so much to me and Sabrina in a way it's nice to know that other people receive some not-so-nice emails. Not that I'd ever want anyone to have their feelings hurt, but at least I'm not being targeted specifically!

Kathy--enjoy your gloss! I just wore it the other day!

I had considered giving up for just a second but then realized how much I enjoy keeping this up so I'm not going anywhere! It's too bad there seem to be so many nasty people out there but that's life! :)

  19. Whaaat??!!! I can't believe someone wrote that to you...so, only those who buy truckloads of stuff are entitled to blog about beauty, then?? That's ridiculous! I believe that sometimes, if you buy too much, you actually lose sight of why and what you're writing about, you start lacking lucidity...you know, you can't see the wood for the trees, and all that. I may not comment very often, but I read each one of your posts and enjoy them very much, even if a lot of the stuff you buy is not available over here! Hugs and xx
