Tarte Amazonian Clay Shimmering Powder

I ordered this from QVC because it came with what looked like a phenomenal brush, all for less than the cost of just the product had I purchased it elsewhere. The powder is a shimmering champagne that I though would be perfect to highlight cheekbones and browbones, but I cannot get it to show up on me unless I really pack it on with the included sponge. Granted a highlighter should be subtle, but I literally cannot discern any difference whatsoever when I use the brush to apply the product. I'm seriously considering returning it. Keep in mind that I am quite fair--those with darker skin will have a greater contrast with the powder and may find it more noticeable.

Two Tarte Disappointments

I remember when Tarte cosmetics first premiered at Bergdorf Goodman years ago. I had a makeover and bought a ridiculous number of products, and continued to purchase and for the most part love everything. The last 2 items I've used, however, have not fallen into the 'love' category. The first is the 'natural' iteration of their Lights, Camera, Lashes mascara. I used this several years ago, back when it was chock full o' chemicals and liked it. It's now free of parabens, pthalates et al, and bored with how quickly my beloved Korres mascara dries up, I purchased the Tarte.

I get nice length and thickness from it, especially over their mascara primer, but boy oh boy is this flake city! I've had two coworkers (including a guy) come over and that my face was covered in black flakes it was so bad. One close friend, unprompted and out of the blue, said "whatever mascara you've been using lately--stop." Lesson learned. I tossed it and rebought the Korres.

Clark's Botanicals Ultra Rich Lip Tint

Every now and then, I wish I was one of those girls who had just a chic little makeup bag filled with just a handful of treasured items that, when applied, made her look effortless glamorous and natural at the same time. You know, those starlets and socialites who swear that all they use is MAC Twig lip pencil, a smidge of Rosebud Salve and Maybelline Great Lash before they leave the house? Instead, I have a plethora of beauty products that have taken over my one bedroom apartment and the unlimited number of combinations can make getting ready in the morning a time consuming process. If I was that understated minimalist, I think that Clark's Botanicals Ultra Rich Lip Tint might be one of the the products in my arsenal.

This is a highly emollient lip balm that comes in clear as well as four tinted shades. I ordered Alexandra Rose from Dermstore, and after a (lengthy!) 2 week wait, I received it yesterday. Contrary to the website's characterization as "ultra sheer," I find this to pack a pigmented punch. It's a bright pink learning towards the warmer side that definitely shows up well, even on pigmented lips. It's a great pick me up face brightener and is non-sticky and very moisturizing. The downsides are that it is $19 for a small tube and the product needs to be reapplied often. It also has a very strong scent--sort of a sweet jasmine--that does not dissipate. It's offensive enough to me that I'd actually remove the gloss prior to eating or drinking, but I could those who enjoy scented lip products being fine with it.

I'm not an Urban Decay fan, but I was looking for a sheer pop-of-color cream blush to layer over my bronzer and happened upon their new Afterglow Glide-On Cheek Tints ($24). Sephora describes the product as a "sheer, buildable cheek tint that glides on effortlessly and feels truly weightless," a description I agree with. I picked up the shade Score, which is a sheer peachy pink (more pink than peach) with gold shimmer. I think that the sheerness makes it look natural, and the golden glimmer is very pretty, but some might find it over the top. I'm very fair and find that the color builds nicely, but those with deeper skins will probably find that this shade does not show up. I've heard rants regarding the lasting power of this product but I haven't had any issues with it fading.

Sue Devitt For Spring!

I rarely check out Sue Devitt anymore, but was stumbling around Barney's on Saturday and happened upon her Hydrating Marine Minerals Destination Eye & Cheek Palettes in Solomon Islands and Beausoleil. I'll forgive Sue for giving this product the longest name ever, because the palettes are beautiful and perfect for Spring! Solomon Islands (on the wishlist!) is a pink/coral/bronze fusion, and Beausoleil is a medley of peaches and bronze. Not inexpensive at $37.50 each, but luminescent and pretty without being over the top. I didn't take the plunge yet since I'm still playing with my new Edward Bess bronzer and Urban Decay Afterglow Cheek Tint, but it's only a matter of time before I cave.

Chantecaille Centifolia Lip Sheer

I've had this lipstick on my wishlist for ages now. I hadn't purchased it mainly because it looks just like all of my other lipsticks--a sheerish peachy pink with a hint of shimmer--but caved on a recent trip to Bergdorf's. Centifolia is very sheer, more so than my other Chantecaille Lip Sheers. It provides just a hint of color along with a moisturizing shine. Is it remarkable? No. Worth $28? Probably not. But it's the kind of lipstick that can live in your purse and work with any look on days you forget to bring your lipstick of the day or want to switch things up. I also prefer this newer formula in the skinny tube. It's paraben-free, unless the prior incarnation.

A Mini Binge

So there are good binges (a makeup or shoe haul) and bad binges (eating half a dozen William Greenberg Black & White cookies) and because I was on the verge of the latter thanks to a cornucopia of stress, I decided to effectuate the former. Thus, I found myself on the poorly lit beauty floor of Bergdorf Goodman, telling the Edward Bess Sales Associate that yet another coworker had just commented on how tired I looked and pleading with her for some help.

I walked away with Edward Bess Ultra Luminous Bronzer in Daydream (a favorite of Sabrina over at the Beauty Look Book) and a few Chantecaille goodies that I'll post about tomorrow. I was debating between this bronzer and Chantecaille Capri, but fate intervened when the store was out of the Chantecaille. Daydream is a cocoa-brown shade with no orange or pink tones. It's sheer enough to be used all over the face, but can be built up to be used on the planes of the cheeks, nose and forehead that would naturally be toasted by the sun. I'm using my Bobbi Brown Face Blender brush with it, but the makeup artist applied it with Edward's lovely, though super pricey ($65) version. At $48 this isn't an inexpensive item, but not having a colleague ask when the last time you slept? Priceless.
P.S. I ended up eating 2 mini size of the aforementioned cookies. They really are exceptional. My top 5 favorite cookies in NYC:

Taupe Craze!

I had vowed no more eye shadows, but I stopped into the Lancome boutique today and stumbled upon the new Color Design Eye Brightening All In One 5 Shadow Palette and Liner Palettes ($48). Taupe Craze was just too pretty to leave without! These shadows are unbelievably smooth and pigmented and extremely high quality. Lancome doesn't get nearly enough love, and these will make a convert out of the skeptical. I purchased Brush 8 ($26.50) to use with it. Technically a concealer brush, this tapered taklon number is what the makeup artist recommended to use. It deposits pigment well and has a sharp enough edge to use as a liner brush as well.

Go. Buy. This. Polish.

Here is my manicure of the week. This nail polish was under $3 I believe at Duane Reade and is beyond stunning. It's a pale lilac with holographic microshimmer that I cannot stop staring at. Staple Eye of the Day

I dusted off some old favorites for today's look: Rock & Republic shadows in Veil, Affair and Diffusion, Lancome Le Crayon Kohl in Black Coffee and Tarte Lights, Camera, Lashes mascara. This picture was taken after about 10 hours of wear. My mascara has wilted a bit but the shadows and liner are still going strong. I wish Rock & Republic had stuck around--I would have loved to see new shades and products from the line given how high quality I found nearly every product I tried from them.

Horror of horrors, I arrived at work yesterday and promptly realized that:
A. I had become a human popsicle, and
B. I left my lipstick at home and somehow had no other lipstick or gloss in my purse

While the former probably won't change until the weather warms up in March, across the street from my office is a Company Store, one of the 'By Invitation Only' Cosmetic Company Outlets. I picked up a Bobbi Brown Creamy Lip Color in Blush Rose, a soft warm pink. While I generally dislike lip products in pots, this was the best color choice available.

My very favorite lipstick is Bobbi's Creamy Lip Color in Baby, and this is a few shades brighter and pinker. It applies sheerly, as you can see in the swatch. I'm not terribly fond of this formulation in pan form--the product is just too soft. I only applied it twice and you can see the dent that it has made already--pan is visible! If you're the type that can never finish a lipstick and want to experience that satisfaction, I highly endorse the Creamy Lip Color. I go through tubes of it extremely quickly.

Chanel Glossimer in Meteore

I had a couple of minutes to kill right by Bloomingdales the other day and all of a sudden found myself at the Chanel counter swatching Glossimers. I'm not a gloss person and have never been interested in the Glossimers before, but the gorgeousness of Meteore won me over and it came home with me!

Meteore is a deep sheer pink with the most beautiful holographic iridescent shimmer. It can feel a little gritty and the color is much more subtle on the lips than in the tube. No scent or taste and not too sticky, I'm a fan of the formula, certainly more so than the price (which I believe was around $32 with tax).

Origins Brighter By Nature™ SPF 30 Skin Tone Correcting Makeup

I've always loved Origins Silk Screen Refining Powder Makeup. I had considered it a holy grail but switched to Bare Escentuals Matte a few months ago, mainly out of a combination of boredom and curiosity. I find myself shiny by mid-day with the BE and when I saw that Origins had a new powder foundation with SPF 30, I jumped.

This oil and talc-free powder is designed to absorb shine and gently illuminate with a small amount of mica. I only use powder on my t-zone to mattify and even out the skin a bit so I cannot attest to how it fares over cheeks, but so far I really like it. The included sponge provides medium to full coverage and the product doesn't look too chalky on the skin the way some powder foundations can. The shade selection is pretty good (though I wish there were neutral shades and not just cool and warm) and the price is right at $27.50.

Kiehl's Argan Oil Hair Care

I've been using the highly recommended Alterna Caviar Shampoo and Conditioner for the past few months on my long, straight, fine, dry hair and was still waiting to see the magic when I got to the bottom of the bottles. The products were absolutely fine, but not spectacular enough to repurchase, certainly for the price, and I started searching for replacements. I've had a Kiehl's gift card burning a hole in my wallet forever and figured haircare was a good prospect since I dislike their skincare. I had used the Olive Oil line in the past but given that it contains parabens I opted for the sulfate and paraben free Argan line.

The Superbly Smoothing Argan Shampoo and Conditioner ($18 and $19 respectively) have a slight chemical scent and definitely won't have anyone coming up to you telling you you're hair smells fantastic. The shampoo does a decent job of cleaning the hair without terribly stripping and the conditioner feels very light but has tamed my static-y fly aways. My hair looks smooth and doesn't feel weighed down, and enable me to skip a day of washing my hair without looking greasy.

One small nitpicky issue--the packaging is so ugly! I don't mind the cheap, recyclable bottles since they are typical of the Kiehl's pared down aesthetic, but the color combination is not enticing or attractive. Nonetheless, the products have been working well and I intend to finish them.

Armani Beauty Spring Collection 2011 Eye Pencil

When I initially spied the Armani Spring Transluminence Collection at Saks, I completely ignored the 3 eye pencils included. To me, they looked like basic brown, black and green pencil liners, and while I don't think I need another brown liner, I was certain I had no use for a $27+tax one. Well folks, I was wrong. While the shades are not spectacular, the texture and formula certainly is. These glide on like no other liner I've tried--almost like a liquid or gel but with the ease of use of a pencil liner--and set for all day wear. You have a minute of so of smudge time but once this baby dries, it's on for the long haul! It lasted through both snow and a workout with nary a smear, flake, or fade. The brown has a very subtle shimmer when applied as well. Despite my initial hesitation, I am going to pick up the green as well. I purchased mine from Bloomingdales, but Saks also has the collection if you're looking to pick it up in person. Online, it's available at Nordstrom.

Scott Barnes Creme Color in Luster

This couldn't have come at a better time. I wasn't at work 3 minutes when a male coworker came up to me to tell me I looked tired. Clearly I need wither sleep or a new highlighter, and the latter is much easier to procure.

I've admitted in the past that watching beauty shows on QVC is a guilty pleasure and while I've never actually ordered Perricone products, I've always been amazed by the radiant glow the brand's spokesperson, Dana, has on air. When I read that she used Scott Barnes Creme Color in Luster on her cheeks (over Tarte Dollface, for those interested), I immediately went on a quest for it. Luckily Strawberrynet carries the now-defunct brand and for a mere $18, this baby was mine.

First of all, this thing is itsy bitsy teeny tiny. The plastic case is about an inch on each side and the product is around the size of a nickel. I don't know why I'm complaining since it's not like I ever use anything up, but for those interested in bang for buck, this might not be for you. The shade is a luminous champagne with a hint of ever-so-slightly-bronzey warmth. If you find that most highlighters look ashy on you, this would be a great option. It's creamy and glowy without being glittery and really does impart a radiance to the apples of the cheeks, more so than a Bobbi Brown Shimmer Brick or Laura Mercier ShimmerBloc. I'm not quite sure why, but darned if it doesn't do what it promises. The camera doesn't seem to capture it but the mirror does. A+!

I've said it before--I am not a drugstore girl. I love the feeling of plunking down my Amex at a high end department store and walking out with a tiny, fancy bag of overpriced, gilded treasures. However, I've spent way too much already this week and was having the kind of day that only a purchase could fix (believe me, I tried 2 glasses of wine first) so I headed to Duane Reade, my local drugstore (followed by Tasti D-Lite for a Snickers topped with Butterfinger) and came home with these guys:
NYC Blushable Creme Stick in Plaza Pink, Prevail Nail Lacquer in Concrete Jungle, Brucci Nail Hardener in Johnny's Girl. Grand total: $13.42 (plus $5 for the ice cream. It is NYC after all).
Concrete Jungle is a lavender shimmer with holographic microglitter. Johnny's Girl is the ubiquitous semi-sheer light pink.
I'd read that Plaza Pink is a peachy pink with golden shimmer, but it's definitely a soft baby pink with silver pearl to me. That's the other reason I shy away from drugstore makeup--you can't try before you buy. This seems a bit too cool for me so I'm glad it was only $3.99. Here it is compared to my only other drugstore item, which just so happens to be a NYC Blushable Creme Stick in Big Apple Blush.

A Small Pink Haul

I stopped by the Bobbi Brown counter at Saks this afternoon intent on getting a Pot Rouge. MY cheeks have been dry, my complexion sallow, and I felt I needed something a bit brighter and pinker for blush to help take me through the winter. The makeup artist suggested Powder Pink and it took me all of 3 seconds to say "yes." While there, I also picked up a replacement Creamy Lip Color in Baby and a Metallic Lip Color in Gilded Pink. I've gone through two tubes of Baby already, quite a feat for someone who never uses up a lipstick. Baby is a sheerish, natural peachy pinky beigey lip color. I adore the shade, but am less fond of the formula which I find the be quite thick, so much so that my hair sticks to it when the wind blows. I've been looking for a duplicate and found that Gilded Pink is the most similar shade in the line, albeit a touch sheerer and less brown. Nonetheless I had to pick up an additional Baby. I tried to purchase a Pale Pink Lip Liner but the counter was out.

The closest item I have to Powder ink Pot Rouge (on the left, below) is Julie Hewett Destiny Cheekie (on the right). Destiny is a bit "sandier" and warmer.Here is Gilded Pink (left) compared to Baby (right). You can see how close they are in the tube and when swatched. Gilded Pink is surprisingly sheer.
I then came home and was cooking dinner when I must have leaned too close to the stove (and not realized how long my hair had gotten) because all of a sudden my hair was on fire! The flames quickly shot up my hair and in the millisecond it took my to put out the fire, I'd managed to singe off quite a bit, necessitating an emergency hair cut (which is hard to do on a Monday since salons are generally closed). That's the great thing about New York though--something is always open. $90 later I have cleaner ends and a bottle of It's A 10 Leave In Product since I'm a total sucker when at the salon and the pink bottle pushed me over the edge. Now if only there was something that could get the odor of burning hair out of my apartment...

Chantecaille Wind Blush

If you've noticed that many of my posts lately have been about blush, well...you're right. I go through phases--sometimes I'm obsessed with lipsticks or eyeliners or nail polish--and now it's blush. To me, nothing makes a winter weary face look better than a swipe of cheek color, but I'd been feeling as though my summer pop-of-color blushes were a bit bright on my ghostly pallor. Enter Chantecaille Wind. This blush is pale but pigmented, if that makes any sense. You don't need to apply much or layer for the color to show, but the shade itself is subtle. Just enough to add a peachy neutral warmth without screaming makeup. Chantecaille blushes are expensive at $28, but the formula is lovely. In fact, the only blush I've ever actually finished completely was another Chantecaille in the shade Silk.

Edward Bess Dusk Eye Shadow- dare I say it--potential holy grail! Smokey yet somehow natural at the same time.Lancome Le Crayon Kohl Eye Pencil in Black Coffee- a dark brown that goes on without tugging yet lasts all day. Works well without irritating on the waterline as well.
Tarte MultiplEYE Lash Enhancing Primer- finally a mascara primer without harmful ingredients. This one really works too!
Fekkai Marine Summer Hair Zero Humidity Frizz Control- tames flyaways, frizz and static while smelling absolutely delectable.

Josie Maran Argan Oil- I use this on my hands under my hand cream at night and it's the only thing preventing my hands and cuticles from becoming sorry, cracked and raw.
Jurlique Lavender Hand Cream- very pricey for the tiny size but sinks in quickly and works extremely well.
Viktor & Rolf Flowerbomb- always elicits compliments
Ginestet Botrytis- like candied fruit mix with autumn air. I wear this one for me, not to attract anyone else. Reminiscent of the long and sadly discontinued Escada Collection, one of my all-time favorite fragrances.

Benefit Coralista

I know, I know. I'm super late to the party on the Benefit boxed powders. I've always been intrigued by them but was deterred because I thought they'd be a pain to store due to how oversized they are. Sephora was offering a full sized Coralista and mini Bad Gal lash as a 500 point perk recently and I figured it was high time I gave in and tried them.
Coralista is a beautiful pink coral with golden shimmer. Yes, it looks like 90% of me others blushes but I'm telling myself it's just different enough! The shimmer is subtle on the skin and the shade is a great face brightener, especially now that we're really hitting the frigid winter weather and the sallowness that comes with it. I really want to try Sugarbomb next! I just wish these came in slimmer cases.

NARS Turks and Caicos Multiple Tint- scary orange in the tube, gorgeous peachy coral flush on the cheeks. I'd buy a backup if I didn't think this would last forever. Has anyone ever finished a NARS Multiple?
Origins Multigrain Bronzer, Julie Hewett Goldie Shimmy and Benefit High Beam- all the essentials for naturally bronze, glowing skin.
Paul and Joe Face Color 16 Canyon- my powder blush pick of the year. Perfect blend of bronze and peachy pink.
Aveda Juneberry Lip Shine- a few shades deeper than my lip color with a hint of shimmer.
Paul and Joe Lipstick 17- a real my-lips-but-better shade. Goes on sheer and luminous.

What I Bought This Weekend

I went to the Limelight Market in Chelsea to pick up the full sizes of the Om Aroma skincare products I've been using since Black Friday. I had plenty left in all but the toning mist, but the mini sizes I've been using will be perfect for travel and you receive a discount for purchasing the whole set of products. My products came in what must be the old packaging--jars instead of pumps. At first I was disappointed since I prefer pumps for hygienic reason, but there is something a little luxe about dipping your fingers into a a small jar of a precious unguent! The founder of the line was working the store and remembered my from last time. I'm really liking these products!

For those who haven't been, Limelight is an old church that was converted to a small, quaint shopping center. They have amazing food, beauty, accessory and jewelry shops. In addition to OM Aroma, there is also Face Stockholm, Sue Devitt, The Avery Perfumes and more.

I also had my Sephora VIB $20 off a $40 purchase gift card burning a hole in my pocket and despite needing no makeup whatsoever, I picked up a Lancome Artliner in Aubergine (which is limited for the holidays according to the Sephora display) and Sephora Collection Retractable Waterproof Lip Liner in Nude (a light pinky beige). The lip liner was $12 which I think is expensive for the Sephora brand. I really wanted Illamasqua Nail Polish in Viridian but unfortunately they were all sold out!

I present my super-dry-hands-and-cuticles manicure of the week! This week a resurrected a favorite from last holiday season, Sephora by OPI 212-Sephora. This is a smokey black shade with copper flecks and rainbow shimmer. It's very festive and pretty on short nails without being a typical seasonal metallic red. It's different and pretty and always elicits positive comments.

In case anybody is scouring Sephora.com trying in vain to find something to buy with their VIB gift certificate, I thought I'd share my most recent brush acquisition. It's the Sephora Collection Professional Mineral Powder Brush #45. This synthetic brush is just $26 but is worth at least double in my opinion. I recently started using Bare Escentuals Matte Foundation just in my T-Zone to even out my complexion (ahhh...aging. I never needed coverage before!) and this brush applies it perfectly. I get decent coverage that looks natural without the buffing buffing buffing that BE brushes require. The brush is dense but soft and would work with any pressed or loose mineral foundation as well as bronzer or blush. Check it out!

My New Love

I had zero need for a new blush. Actually less than zero. Not only do I have a ton currently in rotation, but I have a bunch in my "to sell/give away" pile right now. So had logic prevailed, I never would have come home with my new Laura Mercier Second Skin Blush in Rose Petal, but I'm quite glad that I did.

The Laura Mercier site describes Rose Petal as a matte fresh pale pink, though in reality the shade has enough warmth in it to work with my coloring, though not so much that it could be called a true peachy pink or coral. I'd call it a sheer, warm light pink. It applies beautifully and looks very natural. I love the transparency that these blush have--it really makes the color look like it's coming from within and is a big improvement in my opinion over Laura Mercier's previous blush formulation.

These blushes are $24 and the Laura Mercier website currently has a gift with purchase until 5PM CST with a $75 purchase. It's not the most thrilling gift to me, but a nice treat if you were going to spend that much anyway.

I've Started To Use A New Skincare Line

I've mentioned below that the Short Hills Malls (technically The Mall at Short Hills but I'm just no that fancy) is "my" mall, the mall I grew in so to speak. There was a time where I knew every inch of it, every, store, every parking garage, every line it carried. It's undergone some changes over the last few years, incorporating even more luxury level stores and remodeling some of the older ones. Every time I go back to visit there seems to be something new, and this time was no exception.

In place of what I *think* was the old Samsonite Black Label (which I know used to be the old Temple St. Clair boutique) is a beautiful new venue housing skincare line Om Aroma & Co. The space is pretty large for a skincare boutique and very nicely done.

Om deems itself anti-aging organic luxury skincare and is free of parabens, formaldehyde, sulfates, and other toxic chemical fillers. They've won several awards and all products are manufactured and packaged in the US. The prices are towards the luxury end of the market but the ingredients are high quality and organic.

I picked up a trial package fro Normal skin--my skin is dry in the winter but I've been having some breakouts on my forehead of chin for some reason so I'm leery of using anything overly hydrating--($49) as well as the Pumpkin Seed Night Serum ($58). It's only been a few days but so far so good. I'll report back as I continue to test the products. Here's what I'm using:

Elixir de Beaute Facial Cleanser ($38)- A gentle foaming cleanser with crushed champagne grape seeds, rosemary and aloe. A tiny bit goes a long way and foams without harsh detergents. Ingredients: Organic Olive (Olea Europaea) Oil*, Organic Jojoba (Simmondsia Chinensis Seed) Oil*, Organic Coconut (Cocos Nucifera) Oil*, Vegetable Glycerin/Gum Extract, Blend of crushed Champagne Grape Seeds and powdered Mother of Pearls, Organic Aloe Vera Gel (Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice)*, Essential Oils, Rosemary Extract (Rosmarinus Officinalis Leaf Extract)
Aromatonique Toning Mist ($28)- I've never been a fan of toners but the sales associates says that the lavender is anti-bacterial and would help with the few blemishes on my forehead. I like that this is alcohol free. Ingredients: Blend of Chamaemelum nobile (Roman Chamomile) Distillate* and Lavandula hybrida (Lavender) Distillate*. Lonicera japonica (japanese honeysuckle) extract.
Pumpkin Seed Night Serum ($58)- Rosehip Oil based with pumpkin seed and meadowfoam oil. High in Omega Fatty Acids and vitamin for cellular rejuvenation. Ingredients: rosa canina (rosehip) fruit oil*. cucurbita pepo (pumpkin) seed oil*. limnanthes alba (meadowfoam) seed oil. helianthus annuus (sunflower) seed oil*. extracts of lavandula angustifolia (lavender)*, daucus carota sativa (carrot) root*, lonicera japonica (honeysuckle) flower*, symphytum officinale (comfrey) leaf*, foeniculum vulgar (fennel) fruit*. fragrance (100% essential oils). *certified organic.
Extrait de Caviar Eye Cream ($58)- with Co Q-10 to reduce fine lines and filled with hydrators. Ingredients: organic avena sativa (oats) kernel meal infusion. carrier oils of oenothera biennis (evening primrose) oil*, rubus idaeus (red raspberry) seed oil, cucurbita pepo (pumpkin) seed oil*, rosa canina (rosehip) fruit oil*, prunus amygdalus dulcis (sweet almond) oil*, oryza sativa (rice) bran oil. glycine soja (soybean) oil* (and) helianthus annuus(sunflower) seed oil* (and) extracts of caviar, secale cereale (rye) seed, ginkgo biloba (ginkgo) leaf*, lavandula angustifolia (lavender)*, daucus carota sativa (carrot) root*, prunus armeniaca (apricot) fruit*, lonicera japonica (honeysuckle) flower*,symphytum officinale (comfrey) leaf*, foeniculum vulgar (fennel) fruit*. emulsifying wax nf (veg). theobroma cacao (cocoa) seed butter*. vegetable glycerin. butyrospermum parkii (shea butter)fruit*. stearic acid (fr.soybean). tocopherol (vit.e). silk amino acids. coenzyme q10. polyaminopropyl biguanide.
Creme Luxe Truffle ORganic Age-Defying Face Cream ($72)- this comes in 3 formulas depending on skin type: Oily/Light, Normal/Combination or Dry/Mature. I am using the Normal Version. This version has Sweet Almond, Rice Bran and Red Raspberry and Silk Protein. The Oily one features Papaya, Apricot and Oats and the Mature iteration contains Red Raspberry, Meadowfoam and Rosehip. Mini Aveda Haul

I did way to much shopping for my own good this Black Friday. One of my favorite things about going home to visit my parents is spending time at The Mall at Short Hills, "my" mall growing up. Imagine all of the lovely, wonderful, high end stores you'd love to have gathered in one place without any of the "filler" stores like Piercing Pagotas and Game Stop. I rarely venture into Aveda but wanted to stop in and see if anything. I found myself leaving with their loose Comforting Tea and a Lip Shine in Juneberry.

I love the Aveda tea for the evenings. It's caffeine free and is one of the very few teas that has a natural sweetness to it so it doesn't require sugar. It's perfect for when you're craving a snack but don't want the calories. They say it contains licorice root and peppermint but I'm a die-hard anise/fennel hater and do not find this licoricey at all. I find $24 to be expensive to tea but you only need a teaspoon at a time so it should last quite a while.

I so did not need another lip gloss but this Lip Shine called to me. It has the signature Aveda scent that I love in a non-sticky, all natural formula with fruit and vegetable extracts to provide anti-oxidant protection. The shade, Juneberry, is a little different for me but not so far out of my comfort zone that I won't wear it. It's a deep, blushy, just plummier than natural lip shade with a hint of sparkle and a translucent formula. Very pretty on it's own or over lip pencil.

This is Rimmel London Steel Gray, a shade similar to Sephora by OPI Metro Chic and OPI You Don't Know Jacques. The Rimmel polishes have these amazing flat, wide brushes that allow you to coat the nail in one stroke. I think they're genius!

L'Occitane Fleur Cherie Makeup Collection

When L'Occitane released their Peony fragrance line in the spring, it was accompanied by a complementary capsule makeup collection. Though the fragrance remained part of the line, the cosmetics disappeared. With the debut of the new Fleur Cherie products for the holiday season L'Occitane has again released a small group of makeup that will only be sticking around for a limited time.

The fragrance and shades are not exactly reminiscent of the season. The fragrance is a light floral and the makeup in shades of coral, rose and pink. Even the peach and white packaging connotes spring in my opinion. Nonetheless, some of the products are lovely, particularly the sheer coral lipstick I picked up, Corail Brocart. The lipstick is semi-sheer and quite smooth and moisturizing. It contains orange blossom extract, ostensibly for softness. The packaging is a paper tube evocative of the early Stila lipsticks and the lipstick itself has a light, non-offensive fragrance. There are 5 shades from which to choose t $14 each, though my store only had 3.

Other products include a highlight powder a la Guerlain Meteorites (image below. This item had already sold out at my local boutique), blush duos, eye shadows, a lip gloss compact, eye liners and wand-style glosses. Again, while the website has 5 shades available for purchase, my boutique had only 2 remaining. Ever have one of those days where you just NEED to purchase something as a pick-me-up? I rationalize that it's better for me than scarfing down pie and if the item is inexpensive, so much the better! That is how this lovely gloss made it's way into my life! Burt's Bees Super Shiny Natural Lip Gloss in Juicy Peachy is moisturizing without being sticky and has a yummy citrus fruity scent. The color, while quite sheer, is gorgeous--a shimmery peachy nude. Don't expect long lasting color, but at $7 I don't mind reapplying frequently. The all-natural ingredient list is a plus as well!

Be Still My Heart- FINALLY A Decent Sephora Beauty Insider Gift!

Between Friends and Family (I can't believe I still haven't shared my haul!) and the recent VIB coupon, I had racked up a truly embarrassing number of Sephora points. The problem was that none of the 100 point gifts appealed to me at all. A mini shaving cream? Yet another primer sample? No thanks. Imagine my surprise when the recent 100 point gift was not only good but awesome! Mini Make Up For Ever HD Microfinish Blushes in #6 Quickie, a gorgeous bright salmon pink! The shade is pretty similar to my Becca Grapefruit Beach Tint but does not have he strong scent and is not meant to double as a lip tint. I've been looking for a cheek and lip stain for quite a while now. I am one of those people who, despite countless magazine articles insisting that everyone looks good with a just-in-from-the-cold flush, cannot wear pink of berry blushes. This greatly limits my cheek stain options since while deep rose hues abound, peachy pinks are a rare breed. I found bronzes, I found oranges, I even found a deep burnt coral and plum, but alas no stain to suit my coloring.

Then I stumbled upon Becca Beach Tint in Grapefruit. While not a traditional liquid or gel stain, this product does act like a tint for all day indelible wear and lo and behold, Grapefruit is a beautiful peachy pinky coral (similar to Makeup For Ever HD Blush in 6) that flatters my pale skin. I like a stronger cheek and so I apply 2 layers to build the color, but if you crave subtly one will be just fine. It does have a strong grapefruit smell which I neither understand nor care for, but it dissipates in a few minutes. A few Duane Reades in the city now carry the line if you'd like to check out the Beach Tints--there are several lovely shades from which to choose including a peach (another hard to find stain shade).

Years ago, Bergdorf Goodman carried a line of cosmetics by makeup artist and brow guru Ramy Gafni. The hues had cheeky names like Chutzpah, and the line seemed well-edited and quite wearable, if not ordinary. Duane Reade, an NYC drug store chain who's sheer number of outlets seems to rival Starbucks, started making over some of its stores, stocking them with high end cosmetics from lines like Becca, 100% Pure and Ramy. I stumbled across the Whipped Liqui-Air Mousse blushes, silicone based cream blushes in wand-style tubes and found them tempting, but I wasn't ready to shell out the money.

Lo and behold, as I was going through the sale offerings on drugstore.com during the Beauty.com Friends and Family event, I found this blush in the shade Alive on sale for just $4.99 and scooped it up. Alive is a bronzy peachy shade, definitely on the warm side, that goes on and blends easily thanks to the silicone base. Now that fall is decidedly in the air, I've switched to darker nail colors. I have a real issue with nail polishes chipping given how often I wash my hands, but I've discovered that layering a glitterly polish over top helps extend the wear time of my manicure. Plus it just looks so gosh darn pretty. This week I'm wearing Sephora by OPI A Little Dangerous (a deep shimmery eggplanty purple) with Sephora by OPI Only Gold For Me (clear with chunky and micro gold sparkled suspended inside) over top. I've already gotten a number of compliments and will definitely be repeating this combination.

Hi! Is anyone still out there? I know, I know. I've been gone waaay too long. A combination of work, heartbreak and family drama [temporarily] curtailed my mass cosmetic consumption and with very little purchased there was little to write about! That all changed with the Sephora Friends and Family sale! I placed 3 orders! I wanted to share some things I'd been loving in my blogging absence.

I love the new Origins Multigrain Bronzer applied with their new Foundation Brush. I've worn it nearly every single day since I got it almost 2 news ago. Both products are fantastic. Here it is loaded up on the brush:

I've also been using my NARS Turks & Caicos Skin Tint near daily. It's a punchy color on me that last all day until I take it off. I've even slept in it (bad, I know) a few times and it's looked just as fab in the morning. Lancome Crayon Kohl Eye Liner in Black Coffee has become a staple as have Stila Smudge Stick in Purple Tang, and these eye shadows: Edward Bess Dusk, Benefit Fawn Over Me, UD Shakedown, Alima Paris turned into a cream shadow with my Geri G Cosmetics Mixer, and Laura Mercier Vanilla Nuts/Coffee Ground Duo. Add in BE Soul, Becca Tweed, and R&R Veil, Affair, Snakeskin and Diffused and I think I could get rid of all of my other eye colors (though I can't actually bring myself to do so). Lip-wise it's been mostly Bobbi Brown Creamy Lip Color in Baby (HG), Laura Mercier Stick Gloss in Tiger Lily, Origins Smileage Lip Tint in Eco Pink and Burt's Bees Super Shiny Gloss in Juicy Peach. Fekkai Summer Hair Zero Humidity Frizz Control and Viktor & Rolf Flowerbomb have helped get me through the summer (which I'm actually sad to see go. It's chilly here and my summer wardrobe is much cuter than my winter one!).

Laura Mercier Lip Glace

Along with the palette, my Laura Mercier steal of a makeup kit from Gilt contained a brush and 3 mini glosses, called Lip Glace. I'm definitely more of a lipstick girl and this was my first experience with Laura's glosses. These are smooth and not too sticky with a sweet scent that almost completely masks a "makeup-y" smell. The shades are Petal, Bare Beige and Baby Doll, all of which are available in full size for $22. Petal is an iridescent golden pink, Bare Beige a browny nude and Baby Doll a sheer sparkling pink confection. All apply sheerly but with enough pigment to give perceptible color.

A Brief Interlude In The Prolonged Dry Spell

Well the makeup drought seems to be ongoing. I went to NJ today for the Nordstrom Anniversary sale and didn't even peek into Sephora or Neimans, and I only quickly scanned the Beauty Exclusives. I did pick up a Chanel Paradoxal and a replacement Bobbi Brown Creamy Lip Color in Baby, which really has turned out to be my Holy Grail. I've used up but a few lip products in my life and this is one of them. I'll post more on Paradoxal later this week, but so far it's not rocking my world. It's much more gray and flat that one would think from the bottle.

My Laura Mercier Gilt order arrived on Friday! Included was a Satinee Creme Shadow in Ecru Silk and a gift set containing this palette along with three mini glosses and a brush:
The shades are: Vanilla Nuts/Coffee Ground, Gold Dust/Sherazade and Primrose/Kir Royale.

The palette is the newer refillable version so I can swap shades in and out for travel and when I get bored! I'm not a huge pink/purple person so I just may have to head to a counter soon to find a suitable alternative for the Primrose/Kir Royale spot.

I found the Ecru Silk Satinee Creme Shadow to be cakey and streaky, and effect I never experienced with Laura Mericer Metallic Creme Shadows. It promptly found a home with my mother.

The glosses are sheer but beautiful and deserve a post all their own.

MVP Of The Week

I've pretty much been wearing the same face all week: concealer under my eyes, some powder to blot shine on my forehead, NARS Turks and Caicos, a quick wash of a neural shadow, Stila Smudge Stick in Purple Tang and a quick swipe of gloss. I've grabbed Hourglass Extreme Sheen Gloss in Truth on my way ou the door a few times this week and have been pleasantly surprised.

My love for these glosses is well documented, but I haven't reached for them in a while and I have to say that the love affair has been rekindled. In addition to being completely smooth and non-tacky, they are moisturizing, do not leave that white gummy residue on the lips or cause them to flake (hello, Trish McEvoy Beauty Booster gloss!) and yet last quite a while, leaving behind a soft stain. Truth seems to go with almost everything. It's shimmer-free and a perfect combination of peach and blush. Every time I've warn it, I've glanced in the mirror and said to myself "I love this gloss! I have to wear it more often!" It adds just the right depth and polish without giving the impact of a full-on lip.

Are You Buying More Or Less Makeup This Summer?

Inexplicably, I've been less and less interested in makeup lately. I used to jaunt to Sephora or Bergdorfs at least once a week (to say nothing of online orders) but lately I just haven't been in the mood. I'm not sure if I've hit a saturation point, I'm happy with what I'm currently using, companies are producing what I find to be less intriguing products, the summer heat is quashing my desire to wear a full face or I've temporarily shifted my priorities (and cash) to clothes and shoes. It's probably a combination of all of the above. I find that I go through phases like this--for weeks my wishlist will grow out of control and then all of a sudden there's nothing I want to buy. One thing is for sure though: I may not be acquiring makeup in droves, but I sure do love to shop! My closet has exploded with recent acquisitions. I've been overhauling my work wardrobe (I always feel so dorky in business casual and I'm trying to find pieces that make me feel confident and chic in and out of the office) and supplementing my workout gear.

I picked up OPI for Sephora's Iris I was Thinner ($9) last week and finally got around to applying it. It's a total Grimace purple shade. Shimmer-free and opaque with two coats, this is adorable for summer on short nails and like most of this brand's polishes, applies easily. This is going on my toes as soon as OPI's My Chihuahua Bites starts to chip!

Mood Blush (a.k.a. NARS Turks and Caicos)

I used to love those Mood lipsticks when I was younger. You applied a completely outlandish lipstick shade like blush or yellow and before your eyes the shade morphed into something wearable (actually it usually turned hot pink on me but you get the idea). This is how I feel about NARS Multiple Tint in Turks and Caicos--it's a neon orange in the tube yet somehow, magically, it become a coral pink flush on my cheeks.

I am completely enamored with concept of cheek tints. Translucent stains that impart both a sheer color and a glow? Too perfect. When I heard about the NARS Multiple Tints ($38) I was initially thrilled and then deflated when I saw the limited shade selected: a bright pink, a fuchsia and an orange? Not for me. I'm so pleased that I decided to actually swatch the colors! While Beverly Hills and Cadaques are both beautiful though indeed not for me (I can't wear cool blushes), Turks and Caicos transformed before my eyes into a perfect summer "I've been drinking Long Island Ice Teas in the sun" flush and once applied, lasts all day. I appreciate that it's not shimmery and remains ever so slightly dewy after it's set. It's the perfect thing to wear when you want to look like you just woke up vibrant and rested, not made up.

I have no idea if NARS intended this alchemy or if it was merely a happy accident, but either way I plan to make Turks and Caicos a summer staple.

Stila Smudge Stick Waterproof Eye Liner

I rarely if ever buy anything Stila (though it was the first high end brand that I collected extensively) but as I was wandering around Sephora on this hot, humid, icky sticky day, the word "waterproof" on the display caught my eye and drew me to this liner. I'm trying to put together a super-fast, super light, super long-lasting summer look and a vibrant indelible liner seems like just the ticket!

According to Sephora, "this highly pigmented, waterproof eye liner glides on to deliver intense, vibrant color with staying power. Soft, smooth, and easy on the eyes, Stila Smudge Stick Waterproof Eye Liner creates a high metallic, sultry, inky intensity that lasts."

These liners are $20 each and glide on effortlessly with both deep, rich color and noticeable shimmer, then set for the day. I had to use makeup remover to clean the swatches off of my hand. I picked up Purple Tang, a deep, dark purple that shimmers a metallic bright, blue-purple in one light, and a bold grape-plum in another. It's a very pretty, complex, unusual color that I hope will really bring out my green eyes. Because the base is black, I think that a very thin line of this would be appropriate even for daytime.

A Quick Update On The Mixer

I previously reviewed The Mixer from Geri G Cosmetics, lamenting that the high quality product was overshadowed by the unnecessarily strong fragrance it contains. It's funny--though my initial reaction was lukewarm, I find myself wanting to purchase loose eye shadows so that I can use this more and more! It's sweltering here in the city and a pigment mixed with The Mixer and applied with a taklon brush takes all of 30 seconds to put on lasts all day on my eyes with no creasing and no maintenance. Alima Paris and The Mixer endured an 18 hour day that included 6 subway rides, a full workday and a Yankee game with nary a crease last week. Of course, I threw out all of my Bare Escentuals and other loose pigments during my last purge, and now it looks as through I'm going to end up reinvesting! MAC Naked is on my list and I'd love to hear your other favorite loose shadows!

A Rediscovery

Long time, no post! With summer in full swing here in NYC I've been going out more, working out more, spending more on clothes and shoes and wearing less makeup. While it may be a balmy 87 at street-level, in the subterranean, unairconditioned way tunnels that means it's over 100 and the wrong makeup will leave you a smeary puddle before you even arrive at work. And since we walk everywhere here, a quick jaunt to he store can have the same effect. I've been prety much keeping to concealer, some powder on my forehead, a cheek stain, a simple eye shadow look and tinted balm.

Needing a break from the heat I stopped into The Company Store for the air conditioned solace before an appointment and spotted MAC Shell Pearl Beauty Powder. It looked like the loveliest of glowing pinky peach highlight, but I held firm, walked out empty handed and added it to my wishlist. Going through my collection a little while ago I spotted MAC Pearl Sunshine Beauty Powder and while not identical, I'll be darned if the Pearl Sunshine won't do for now! It's peachier for sure, but applied over a bit of blush it adds a pretty warm glow and since I already own it, it's free!
I am still looking for the perfect gel blush for summer. Right now it's between Tarte Cheek Stain in The Perfect Peach, 100% Pure Peach Glow and NARS Turks and Caicos. I'd love to hear what you think I should choose in the comments!

Manicure of the Week

Actually, this is my second manicure of the week. On Saturday I applied Paul & Joe 04 Provence and was so bored of the shimmery pink-beige-nude that today when I picked up L'Oreal Mango-Get-Em on the way home from the gym I couldn't wait to repolish! I love a bright color on short nails in the warm weather and this shade is summer in a bottle! It's a bright mango melon with no shimmer. The formula is stick and streaky and it has quite possibly one of the worst, most unweildy brushes I've ever used, but it dried fast and I love the shade. It's available for $4.99 on drugstore.com, and that's the same price I just paid at CVS.

Every morning when I pick up my purse and head out to the subway I wonder why on earth it's SO heavy. I then I take out my makeup bag and it all makes sense--I schlepp a lot around in this thing!

As much as I love reading about favorites, I think it's also helpful to hear about disappointments so one knows to steer clear! I've had a few lately:

Ellis Faas Milky Eyes- really for the packaging more than the product. Wednesday morning I had the migraine to end all migraines. Like one of those "call your mother to tell her you love her just in case migraines." Luckily and coincidentally I had an appointment with my migraine specialist for that morning but I had to get myself up and dressed so that I could go there and then to work. I thought that Milky Eyes 203 would make for a quick, polished eye so I took it out (I store it applicator down) and turn the dial. Nothing. And again. Nothing. I must have done this 7 times and nothing came out so I put it down, walked away for 5 minutes and came back and turned it. Nothing. I thought I'd turn it one last time and lo and behold, enough for 5 uses came pouring out. I have no patience for this kind of thing when I'm spending $36 a product. The Milky Lips has the same issue but not nearly as bad. As pretty as the blush and some of the other products look, I'm done with this line.
MAC Technokohl in Photograuvre- I love this color. It's a dark brown with a lot of black, or a soft browned black. Either way, it's not too harsh but gives a very defined line. Unfortunately the product drags and skips along my lash line. It's just not soft enough. Maybe I am just spoiled by my Laura Mercier Kohls and UD 24/7 liners.
Aromatherapy Personals- this line of aromatherapeutic roll ons has a variety for seemingly every need from anxiety to crave control. Unfortunately the scents don't last more than a few seconds on the skin, rendering them useless. For a similar de-stress elixir, Origins Peace of Mind works wonderfully.
Organix Coconut Milk Shampoo and Conditioner- hello, dry, straw-like hair!
L'Oreal- I've written before about how badly the Healthy Hair Creme Gloss Color destroyed my hair. I sent an email to L'Oreal customer service about it and never received a response, yet I keep receiving email surveys from them asking me to rate the helpfulness of their reply. And these emails are sent from an unattended mailbox so I can't reply to them, letting them know that their advice was beyond useless since they simply ignored me. Frustrating!

I've bought so much lately I'm getting to that saturation point and thought it would be a good idea to find a loving home for these wonderful products since they are not getting the attention they deserve from me!

Rock and Republic Eye Shadows in Brink and Tempting and mini Gloss in Vacant- Brink and Tempting may just be two of the prettiest shadows I've ever seen which is why I bought them despite the fact that I am totally non-adventurous when it comes to eye shadow and stick to neutrals. Brink is an aqua with a lot of gold. It's been tested twice and there is a small nick in it. Tempting is a phenomenal multi-dimensional purple with amazing shimmer. It's been tested twice too. It is not a regular R&R compact but a plastic sleeve since it was a gift with purchase. It's still full size and has the regular label on the back. Both are soft and incredibly pigmented. Vacant is a deep nude and has been tried once.
Lancome Color Focus Palette in 104 Escapade Champetre (featuring Erika F)- this palette was never available in the US but I tracked it down after learning it contained Erika F. I was able to get an Erika F single shadow and so I don't use this as much as I should given how beautiful it is. The shadows seem much softer and more pigmented than their US cousins. Erika F used maybe 4 times, each other shade just once. The outer case has a scratch on it from a spat with a Shu palette.

An Updated Walking Tour of NYC Beauty

My very first post last August was a Walking Tour of New York City Beauty. With new stores opening and others closing, I thought it was time for an update!

I'm always getting questions about the best places to shop for beauty items in New York City, and so I've compiled a tour of the city for fellow beauty lovers! Forget the Empire State Building and Statue of Liberty--this is the ultimate tour for cosmetic fiends coming this way!

Start out at 26 Grand where you’ll find the quaint Linda Mason shop. She has her own line of cosmetics, including some fabulous cream blushes, all tucked away in adorable packaging. Head North and East further into SoHo for the SoHo Sephora (a very large one), Bloomingdales that has a Space NK inside, Face Stockholm, a MAC freestanding store, Fresh, and the huge Space NK store on Greene. There’s also a Sabon (lovely bath and body products), Origins flagship, Korres store, Amore Pacific, Red Flower, L’Occitane and Bliss. Lafco/Santa Maria Novella is a bit further east on Lafayette. Bond No. 9 is close by in NoHo.

Head up to the Village and check out Aedes de Venustas on Christopher. It’s an incredible shop filled with fragrances galore, including many smaller niche brands. The staff is incredibly knowledgeable and friendly as well. Also check out Makeup For Ever on 8th Street. Walk up towards Flatiron and along the way you’ll hit another Sabon and the wonderful Bigelow Chemists. This has been a neighborhood staple for over 168 years and is the oldest apothecary in America. They have their own line of products in addition to several harder to find brands of cosmetics, fragrances, hair care and skin care. In Flatiron you’ll have Mac PRO (open to the public), another MAC freestanding store, another Sephora, another Origins, Aveda, Three Custom COlor Specialists, and a Jo Malone boutique. There's also an Essentials that carries that largest NYX collection I've seen.

Keep going up 5th to 39th for the Cosmetics Market (discounted high and low end makeup. Stock changes frequently), to 47th where you’ll have the Lancome/Kiehls/Shu/Armani outlet which is open to the public (on the 3rd floor of the L'Oreal building. This is a bit tricky to find as the building is undergoing construction but they often have great deals), then to the 50s and you’ll hit the big time: Saks (50th), Takashimaya (54th), Bendels (55th), Bergdorf Goodman (58th), Barney’s (60th between 5th and Madison/60th and Madison are both entrances) and Bloomingdales (59th and Lex). Bond No. 9 is right next to Barneys. Head up Lex and you’ll have another Sephora, and Laura Geller at 74th. If you go West to Madison you’ll see Clyde’s Chemists, which carries several harder to find lines, many of which I haven't seen elsewhere in the city. The Bare Escentuals boutique is on 65th and 3rd, with Molton Brown next door. Eve Pearl is on 3rd between 49th and 50th and both she and her staff are incredibly nice and helpful.

Come West to Columbus and there’ll be a smaller Space NK, Lancome and Clarins freestanding stores, L’Artisan fragrances, another MAC, and Kiehl’s. The Lancome store is particularly nice and they offer spa treatments as well as brows. Another nice Sephora is on 77th and Broadway, as well as by Lush and The Body Shop. The lovely Blue Mercury is on 83rd for Bobbi Brown, Trish McEvoy, Laura Mercier, Fresh, Bliss and more. If you go all the way up to 125th, you’ll find the Carol’s Daughter shop.

Along the way you’ll pass many lovely spas with fabulous gift shops, including several Bliss locations, Greenhouse, Exhale, Ajune, Apthorp Chemists, Aqua Beauty Bar, and Jeunesse. There’s also the Perricone store on 67th and Madison, Kimara Ahnert on 85th and Madison (private label makeup studio), Le Labo in Nolita for amazing fragrances, and MioMia (Julie Hewett) and CB I Hate Perfume if you have time to visit Brooklyn. Also make sure to stop into one of the many Ricky’s you’ll pass along the way.

If you're going to be in Penn Station, they happen to have one of the biggest and nicest Duane Reades in the city. For some reason this location always has the new drugstore collections and the products tend to be untainted. There is also a Sephora and Bare Escentuals boutique nearby in case you have a long wait for your train. Grand Central has an Origins, MAC store, and Aveda.

If you're visiting Columbus Circle, they have another Sephora, Aveda and Face Stockholm, as well as Crabtree and Evelyn and L'Occitane shops. A brand new Sephora just opened in Times Square, making 2 in 2 blocks! The one on 42nd and 7th carries Illamasqua, Temptu and Lauren Luke. Also in Times Square is a new MAC store and Inglot. This is the only place in the US you can buy the line and I highly recommend checking it out. It's very reasonably priced and high quality.

It's a pretty well kept secret that NYC does have Cosmetic Company Stores. These are exactly the same as the CCOs but are "by invitation only." If you work near one, chances are your company ID will get you access as an invitation is simply your employer being on their list. There are quite a few, including in the Met Life building, 100 Church, the GM building, in the little tunnel world beneath Rock Center, closest to 787 7th, 1 New York Plaza, and the building on the corner of Pine and Pearl.

Don't forget beauty supply stores like Alcone on 49th between 8th and 9th, and Makeup Mania on Orchard on the Lower East Side.

The Mixer

I purchased The Mixer at The Makeup Show and it was one of the purchases that excited me that most. I wanted to give myself a good amount of time to play with it before reviewing, and I'm finally ready to weigh in!

The Mixer is from Geri G Cosmetics and is touted as a "revolutionary makeup enhancer."
The Mixer ($29) can be used as a primer, brow and lash enhancer, to extend the wear of products and my preferred use, turning loose and powder products into creams. I purchased The Mixer because I love cream blushes and shadows and it would enable me to turn my favorite powder shades into long-wearing, water-resistant creams. It is also paraben-free and contains aloe, vitamins, natural botanicals, titanium dioxide for some sun protection, Nanomarine-5 and is said to be irritation free.

The product dispenses from the pump is a white cream with a bit of a waxy feel.

I pump a bit out onto my hand, add a bit of powder, mix with my fingers and apply. The Mixer has a bit of mica in it for added luminosity. It takes super-metallic and shimmery mineral shadows, like Alima Paris (below) and gives them more of a velvety finish. I then just apply with my fingers or a brush and the color sets for all-day wear.

I've also used The Mixer to turn powder blushes into creams. I use the same technique as above. If you have problems with your blush lasting, this will make a big improvement. The Mixer also intensifies the color quite a bit, solving the problem if you have blushes that do not show up or are just a few shades too light.

So the good: The Mixer definitely adds versatility to my makeup collection and I love the ease of turning loose shadows and blushes into creams for easy application and water-resistant, long-lasting makeup. There's no learning curve and it allows you to completely control the depth of color and pigment level you achieve. Change product finishes and textures with ease.

And the bad: I have two big issues with The Mixer. First, it's highly fragranced. I didn't realize this at the show and would not have purchased it if I had. It's what is keeping me from recommending the product wholeheartedly. Fragrance is the last ingredient but I find the scent to be very strong and it takes a long time to dissipate. I'm very reluctant to use The Mixer to create eyeliners (one possible use I was most looking forward to trying) because I do not want to risk irritation by getting something this perfumed into my eyes. I cannot see what the purpose of having any fragrance in a product like this is, let alone one this strong. Though the brand claims that The Mixer has been allergy tested, is MD and Plastic Surgeon endorsed and is irritation free, those sensitive to fragrance should steer clear.

I also have issues with The Mixer balling up if I try to blend too much. Once the product has set, it's set, and any further blending can cause it to ball up or flake off.

The Mixer is also available in a kit with the M Brush, a little mixing spatula and an instructional DVD for $39.

Vapour Beauty Elixir Lip Gloss

I was very excited when I received my sample of Vapour Beauty Elixir Lip Gloss in Sultry in my Spirit Beauty Lounge order. The gloss is said to be made with 70% organic ingredients (the other 30% are mineral pigments and vitamins that are not available as certified organics). It uses a non-petroleum base and combines castor oil and beeswax in a non-chemical process to create a smooth, shiny lip gloss that is moisturizing.

I love the texture of this gloss. It's shiny, smooth and not too thick and there is no stickiness. Some glosses feel goopy and plastic-y while this really does feel nourishing. Sultry looks gorgeous in the packaging--a slightly coral, somewhat russet, natural shade. As you can see in the swatch though, it becomes very sheer when spread. This had almost no color on my lips, unfortunately.

I'm totally torn about Elixir gloss. I love the way it feels on, love the shine and dimension it provides and love that I'm not ingesting chemicals and that it has antioxidants, but I wish it had more color to it. I have enough left in my sample to try this one more time and perhaps I'll like it more applied over lipstick.

Vapour Beauty Mesmerize Eye Color in Flash

I'm slowly making my way through the Spirit Beauty Lounge samples I ordered, starting with Vapour Beauty Mesmerize Eye Color in Flash. I finally got contacts on Friday after 28 years of wearing glasses (yes, I am that old and yes, I plan to be 29 forever) and wanted to be sure I wouldn't risk any eye irritation with a powder shadow today.

Mesmerize Eye Color ($16) is a cream shadow in stick form that stays a bit dewy. There is no powder finish to these. I didn't experience any creasing issues, but I do not have problems with cream shadows creasing and wore this over my Laura Mercier Eye Basics in Linen. Flash is a brown with slight pink tones. I thought that it would make me look tired and ill when I first noticed the pinkiness but surprisingly, it glistened and appeared fresh!

The color range on these is limited--only five shades and two of those are pink and red--but the product made for a quick, simple eye with zero irritation.

Manicure of the Week

This is Priti Firecandle Nail Polish from my Spirit Beauty Lounge order. It's a just-shy-of-bright-neon pink with a subtle opalescent blue shimmer. The camera flash really picks up on the blue making the polish appear a bit more purple than it really is and unfortunately Blogger really washes them out. . This nail polish went on nicely and dried quickly. Hopefully it lasts since I love that the line is non-toxic and big-3 free. $12.50 a bottle makes it a bigger splurge than Essie or OPI but not as great an investment as Rococo Nail Apparel.

My Spirit Beauty Lounge Order

I first learned about Spirit Beauty Lounge from some of the wonderful posters on Emakemeup's Grapevine. Spirit Beauty Lounge was offering 15% off over the Memorial Day Weekend and I took advantage and placed an order!

I love organic and natural beauty lines and am so excited to have found this amazing purveyor of chic, organic and natural products! The site carries a range of brands including Vapour Beauty, RMS Beauty, Alima, Intelligent Nutrients, Revolution Organics, Priti, Yarok and more. One of the coolest offerings is the ability to purchase samples of any 9 products, makeup included, for $15. Everything came beautifully wrapped, tied with pretty pink bows, and they included many extra free samples.

The first item I ordered is Vapour Organic Beauty Aura Radiant Blush in Intrigue, a shimmery peachy pink blush stick shot through with gold shimmer. The ingredients are 70& organic, the other 30% being minerals, pigments, and vitamins not available as certified organic. This is a beautiful product that you can feel good about putting on your skin.

It may sound silly but even the box this comes in is lovely--right down to the hot pink lining. The tube is a shimmery blue plastic. The product itself has a very dewy texture and the blush is not heavily pigmented and blends well. All of the products have a light passion fruit scent but I don't find it overwhelming and it dissipated almost immediately once applied. These are $28 each. I really look forward to trying more from this line.

Next up is Priti Nail Polish in Firecandle. Priti polishes ($12.50) are non-toxic and free of toluene, formaldehyde and DPBs. Firecandle is a bright hot pink with shimmer, perfect for summer!

I also ordered a Sweet Beauty Lip Balm in Taste. These all natural skin and body products are infused with real fine chocolate and blended with superfoods and antioxidants. Taste ($5.50) is said to have a hint of color but goes on virtually clear. As you can see in the swatch, there is barely any pigment. It smells absolutely delicious and the good-for-you-ingredients mean you don't have to feel bad if you give in and lick some off of your lips!

The final item I ordered is the only one that disappointed. Aromatherapy Personals Anxiety Relief sounded fabulous--a nourishing elixir you roll on pulse points containing essential oils known to help reduce anxiety and promote inner calm, including lavender, chamomile, rosewood and sweet orange. I find that Origins Peace of Mind helps with my migraines and also with work-related stress, and this aromatherapeutic equivalent of Xanax seemed like just the thing to tuck into my purse for those moments when it seems like everything that can go wrong is going wrong. Here's the problem: for the whole aromatherapy thing to work, you have to be able to actually smell the product! This scent fades away almost immediately rendering it totally ineffective. At $17 I was expecting more and can't recommend this. I don't know if I received one from a bad batch or if all of the different blends have this issue. For now I guess I'll just open it up and try to smell it from the bottle in trying times!

Overall I'm super pleased with my Spirit Beauty Lounge experience and totally recommend them. My order was placed over a holiday weekend and shipped right out on Monday. The offer free shipping on orders over $100 and I received a coupon when I signed up to receive their emails.

Current Obessions

I go through phases when I can't get the idea of a articular brand or product out of head. Sometimes it's something that I already own and want to wear all of the time. In other instances it's something I can't wait to try.

Some of my latest obsessions include the following:

MAC Eye Shadow in Grain and Edward Bess Eye Shadow in Dusk- both always look great, no matter how tired I am or what other makeup I have on.
Crown Brush Pointed Crease Brush (C139) and Lancome Black Coffee Le Crayon Kohl Eye Liner- the brush is one of the best crease brushes I've used. The shape is perfect for both the socket and outer corner. The eye liner is a deep dark brown that makes the white of your eyes look brighter, and the formula is smooth and silky enough that you can get right up against the lash line with no tugging. It works on the inner rim as well.
Rock & Republic Imitate Mousse Blush in Rumor- this is my favorite blush out of all that I own. The texture is sublime and the shade is perfect. I'm so sad that the line is discontinued. Even though Rock & republic pops up from time to time on sample sale websites, none of them have had the mousse blushes. I'd definitely stock up if I found this one again!
Origins Smileage Plus Lip Tint in Eco Pink- I love tinted balms in the summer and that fact that this one is natural and 95% organic is a huge benefit! Not only is the ginger scent uplifting, but the shade is a spot on--a sheer warm pink. Please excuse how jagged the tip looks; I almost destroyed it trying to take the picture!

Those are some products I already own that I'm loving, but my wishlist keeps growing! Right now I'm obsessing over Vapour Beauty, another organic line. The Aura Radiant Blush and Elixir Lip Gloss are calling my name! I wish I didn't have to order these sigh unseen but they are not available in brick and mortar stores as far as I know.

29 Cosmetics Highlighting Cream Blush is also at the top of the list. According to Neiman's it's a "real honest-to-goodness healthy glow packed with antioxidants that leave the skin naturally looking "blushed" not made up." This line is only carried in a few stores, none of which are on the east coast.

Finally, I'm also totally obsessed with Whole Foods 365 Caribbean Frozen Fruit Bars- strawberry, mango and coconut flavored deliciousness and only 110 calories per bar. It seriously tastes like vacation!

Korres Pure Coral Color Collection

Korres has a new collection out for summer and it's available on their website at a bargain price. Hello, all! I know that I've been somewhat MIA this week. Work has been so stressful that I've just been coming home and basically crashing! I'm hoping that the long weekend will do me a world of good, but you can't start summer without a manicure and pedicure! To me corals just scream summer, and these are the ones I'm really loving lately.

Manicure of the Week

If you've been reading my Manicure of the Week posts since the beginning, this shade might look familiar since it's appeared here previously. Nonetheless, I love it so much it bears repeating! This is Rococo Nail Apparel in Dollar, an opaque, highly metallic silver with shimmer. It goes on easily, lasts decently well, is Big 3 free and a somewhat ridiculous $16.50 (yes, the price has gone up since the line debuted). This shade is in the Molten Lava formula and I think that give s a pretty good indication of how the polish appears in the bottle and on the nails. You can purchase Rococo at SpaceNK in the US and UK. I haven't seen it sold anywhere else and recommend checking it out since the line features many unique shades.

A Drugstore Haul? Me?

I am not a huge fan of buying makeup at the drugstore. Come to think of it, the only item I do have is L'Oreal Aishwarya Beige lipstick. It's not that I have anything against it per se, I just really prefer to swatch shades before I purchase as I've been disappointed countless times in the past when a drugstore shade appeared completely different once they were home and unsealed.

On Friday afternoon I was meeting a friend for drinks in Penn Station (not my first choice locale but he had a lot of luggage of had to make a connecting train) and due to a combination of my hyperpunctuality and a miscommunication about arrival times, I found myself with 20 minutes to kill in one of the most hateful, crowded places in all NYC. Navigating Penn Station on a Friday afternoon at rush hour is the equivalent to being dropped unsuspectingly into the riding of the bulls, except these bulls are vastly greater in number, in a bigger hurry and have commuter rage. My best option was to duck into the Duane Reade in the station and bide my time.

I have to say, for being in a dirty, crowded train station, this Duane Reade is remarkably clean and very well stocked. I saw displays for new makeup collections out and none of the items I looked at had the seals already broken and items tested. The Jane Naturals lines intrigued me, and then in the New York Color main display I saw the Blushable Creme Sticks I've read raves for on Makeupalley. At just $3.99 each I couldn't resist and picked up three: Big Apple Blush, Urban Spice and South St. Seashell. It was difficult to discern the true color through the plastic seal but given the price I thought they were worth the risk for a Friday afternoon pick me up.

I was surprised at how incredibly well these blushes blend on the skin. They are smooth and creamy but with none of the stickiness from a MAC Blushcreme or a Tarte Cheek Stain. Big Apple Blush in a rosy pink. It looked a bit more soft and warm in the tube with the seal on (I've since come to learn that the limited edition Pink Flash is the coral pink one) and is not my ideal color but I think I can blend it with other items to make it work. Urban Spice is a shimmery bronze. Perfect for those interested in the new MAC Cream Bronzers but who do not want to spend as much. It is not too dark but definitely has pigment to it and some shimmer. South St. Seashell is a warm browned tawny peach. Definitely a warm shade. Again, incredibly blendable (even over sunscreen), and no fragrance or parabens either.

I next found the Wet 'n' Wild display and the Natural Wear Lip Shimmers jumped out at me. I have a weakness for tinted lip balms and one that promised to be natural? I was a goner. Don't be misled by the name and packaging--these colors pack a punch. They are definitely more akin to a lipstick than a sheer balm. The shade I have is 101 and is a noticeable peach with a slight pinky undertone, veering towards coral but not quite there. The packaging is completely opaque and while the caps are colored to give an indication of shade, they are not at all accurate. I like that the tube is thicker than most tinted balms (like Origins and Burt's Bees) and after wearing it all day yesterday, I found it to be moisturizing and long-lasting, but goop-free. They are only $1.99 and the ingredient list looks pretty good to me:

My Haul From The Makeup Show-L'Oreal Gift Bag

L'Oreal had a both at the Makeup Show allowing their HiP line of products to be played with, but had nothing for sale. Instead, attendees left with extremely generous gift bags of full size products.

Magic Perfecting Base is a thick, creamy, silicone-based primer designed to smooth lines and hide pores. It blends on easily (I tried it under my undereye concealer) and has that velvety feeling typical of silicone primers. It is fragrance and paraben-free.
I was admittedly shocked by the pigment levels in the HiP Metallic Shadow Duos in Platinum and Gilded. They are very pigmented, very metallic and very cool! I'd have to blend these down quite a bit to wear to the office but they would be very fun for a night out. The lighter shades create a foiled look without needing to be used wet and the darker shades would be nice as a liner. I rarely buy drugstore makeup and had never tried HiP before but these are definitely impressive. If they had duos in more natural/me shades I would pick one up, despite finding the packaging overly and unnecessarily bulky.
HiP Color Presso glosses in Spunky and Chic were also included. The packaging on these is a little odd and takes some getting used to, since the two shades are in 2 separate chambers. You can squeeze just one tube for that color individually, or press both to release both colors which can be mixed on your lips. Both Presso and Chic blend to sheerish berries--the first cooler and the second with some warmth. They have a sweet smell and aren't too sticky on the lips. I don't have many berry shades and Chic looked very nice on! The tubes are cool looking but large and a little awkward to store or fit into a makeup bag.

These was also a Voluminous Mascara in Blackest Black and the 24 Hour Lash Boosting Power System which contains a Double Extend Mascara and Lash Boosting Serum. I used Voluminous way back when and liked it but had never tried the Double Extend or the Serum.
I kind of just tossed these aside when I received them since I use only natural mascaras. With blond lashes I need to really work my mascara into the roots of my lashes and inevitably get mascara right on the underside of my lid. The idea of a multitude of chemicals being absorbed through a membrane line that really concerned me so I jumped on the "natural" mascara bandwagon early on, using Korres primarily but also Tarte. I had been happy with the look of both.
Last night I decided that it couldn't hurt just to try the Double Extend just once. I applied the white primer and then 2 coats of the mascara and had a total OMG moment. My lashes looked AMAZING. Unbelievably long and full, verging on fake, which is an amazing feat for my short, puny, blonde lashes. I've never been this impressed with a mascara. Now I'm torn--do I use the mascara chock full of parabens and other chemicals but makes my lashes unbelievable, or the less potentially harmful one that gives me merely nice ones? Hmmmm...

A Very Serious Topic

Cookies. Let's discuss cookies.

I take my baked goods very seriously, and while I sit squarely in the camp that believes that there is no such thing as a bad pastry, clearly some bites are more worth the calories than others.

After a particularly stressful day at work on Monday, I was faced with choosing from among three mitigating options: shopping, drinking, or mass sugar consumption. I opted for the latter (I'm sure wallet and liver are quite grateful) and headed to Levain Bakery, a tiny, quiet spot nestled below street level on 74th and Amsterdam and renowned for their legendary cookies. Levain cookies are frequently written up and featured on television not only because they are delectable, but because the recipes are a closely guarded secret and each cookie weighs in at a whopping 6 oz, or 3/8th of a pound! They more closely resemble scones in size than traditional cookies.

Levain cookies come in four varieties: Chocolate Chip with Walnuts, Oatmeal Raisin, Dark Chocolate Chocolate Chip, and my personal favorite, Dark Chocolate Peanut Butter Chip. They always bake up crispy on the outside and ooey gooey in the center and miraculously, the chips stay melty long after they are out of the oven. Heaven. Expect the indulgence to cost you $4 a piece.
Runner Up: Zaleti from Not Just Rugelach, located in Green Markets around the city. These appear similar to biscotti, are cornmeal-based and dotted with raisins and sprinkled with powdered sugar. They're very different, very good, and it's very easy to eat the whole bag (or two bags, as they are sold 2 bags for $5).

Honorable Mention: Vosges Caramel Toffee Cookies definitely deserve a shout. Chocolate Chip cookies with caramel toffee pieces inside? Delicious, but expect to pay for it. $5.50 each (not to mention a few hours at the gym). You must like butter to like this cookie, by the way.

Also worth noting are the Kitchen Sink cookies from Amy's Bread in Hell's Kitchen. Inumerable tasty morsels baked inside a soft and delicious batter.

My Haul From The Makeup Show-Crown Brushes

The mass of people surrounding the Crown Brush display at The Makeup Show was so thick and so intense I feared that someone was going to get hurt, either from an elbows being inadvertently thrown or from one of the impatient shoppers experiencing trade show rage! Luckily, everyone seems to have made it out unscathed and I managed to snag a few brushes in the process.

Crown Brush has a vast selection and incredibly prices. You can order brushes from their open stock or have them create private line for you, complete with brand imprint. The brushes that I tried all felt incredibly soft and with so many different shapes to choose from, it's easy to find you have to have. For a mere $23, I was able to purchase 5 brushes--a thin liner brush (C170), domed blush brush (S205), flat top bronzer brush (C108), pointed crease brush (C139) and a short-handled powder brush (IB102).

I had been looking for a blush brush with domed bristled and had both Trish McEvoy and Bobbi Brown on my wishlist. This one is similar and was all of $6.

Here is the problem: I didn't notice at the time, but the brushes smell. Strongly and badly. I have washed them very well with all different shampoos and cleansers three times and spritzed them with Sephora brush cleanser and they still have an odor. The worst offenders are the blush and bronzer brushes. The powder brush, which is from the Italian Badger series, does not smell at all and all of the washing seems to have helped with the crease and liner brush. The blush and bronzer brushes are in the process of drying from their fourth bath, this time with dish soap, and I actually let them hang out in the soap for 10 minutes. Unfortunately if this doesn't work I don't think I can use them, but the total loss is under $12 and frankly my brush cup does runneth over:

Had the booth not been so crowded and had I been able to really see all of the line with care I likely would have detected the issue and not bought them. I would buy from the Italian Badger line again since I've had no problems at all with that brush and am impressed with it's feel and that there has been no shedding. Has anyone ever experienced anything similar from this or any other line? Any other ideas on how to fix this?

My Haul From The Makeup Show-Inglot

Inglot is a line that is new to me, but has been around for over 25 years. They have many boutiques around the globe, with a large number of them being is Australia and only one US outlet, located in Times Square. I was extremely excited when I learned that they would have a booth at the New York Makeup Show, as I've been interested in the line since I stumbled upon their website and, like many native NYCers, I avoid Times Square as much as humanly possible and a visit to the boutique could have been put off for months.

The line seems to be divided into two branches: the Freedom System and individual, a la carte products. The Freedom System allows users to put together their own palette with everything from eye shadows to lipstick. Palettes are magnetized and offer an almost infinite number of combinations. At the show, the wait to create a Freedom Palette was over an hour and so I concentrated on items more quickly and easily obtained!

Inglot's cream and liquid blushes drew my attention immediately. The creams are in small pots and come in 15 shades, all of which seem incredibly wearable. The texture stayed slightly dewy and blended effortlessly. The liquids have a thin, spreadable formula and appear much better on the skin than the Make Up For Ever's incarnation, which to my eye are too matte, dry and powdery. There are 8 liquid shades to choose from. Unfortunately, the area around the blushes was so crowded and cramped every time I went to play that I had a hard time trying everything and deciding what to buy. Many shades were missing from the display at any given time as other show-goers grabbed, dabbed and sampled them. When I do head to the Inglot store, the blushes will be at the top of my list of tings to try.

I did end up with an eye shadow and a lip gloss. The shadow, number 378, is from the matte range and is a deep, dark browned plum. I bought it to use as a cake eyeliner and it hasn't disappointed me. Mixed with a smidge of water it goes on dark and pigmented. The show price was $9.

The lip product is from the Sleeks CREAM Lip Paint line. Packaged like a lip gloss, the formula is very smooth with no stickiness at all. It applies like a liquid lipstick and leaves a nice stain behind. It is scented similarly to Hourglass glosses (think sweet cake batter) and has a doe foot applicator. The shade I purchased, 90, is perfect for summer. It's a vibrant corally rosy pink that I think would work on most skin tones. At $8 I consider i a great buy!

I look forward to trying more from Inglot, starting with the blushes. I appreciate that many items are paraben-free, reasonably priced and that the shade selection selection is vast. Their website lists store locations world wide.
